·        Regional Surveys of Roman Settlement and agriculture

·        Social evolution can be examined through the study of settlement patterns and the manner in which resources of the land were exploited.

·        Field survey: political problems of access as well as problems of making generalisations from small samples. Strength provide large amounts of information unavailable elsewhere – few historical sources.

·        Should not use archaeology solely to back up already certain historical facts – archaeology judges in its own right

·        Pirenne debate – impact Islam on Europe – debate raged using the same Historical documents but different interpretations. Hodges and Whitehouse use archaeological evidence to discuss question.
