  • Pressure pushes tribes in 375 and 405 – 6 into Roman Empire.
  • Differing times allies and enemies. Bleda and Attila ruled together. Absorbed tribes but peaceful with Romans – gradually build up Empire to the north 0 Ostrogoths, Gepids. Attack Eastern Empire in 441.
  • After taking some Roman towns – temp. peace negotiated – after tribute and hostages refused Roman lands ravaged. Large pay-off needed – to pay for this very heavy war taxes, 443 – 450 – hardships exaggerated, but none the less a significant tax.
  • 443 – 447 – unstable peace with Huns – dance attendance on Attila.
  • EE attacked by Huns in 447, by 448 peaceful again
  • Priscus visits Attila in his home.
  • 450 Honria asks Attila to help her – Theodosius dies and Marcian into power.
  • Attila asks for Honoria and tribute from East – so goes to war with the west. Huns v. other tribes. Germanic tribes virtually independent – did respect Roman material, spiritual, cultural civilisation (had all fought Romans under Aetius).
  • Attila spends weeks plundering Gaul. Theodoric and Visgoths join Aetius – Nations from the Atlantic to the Volga met. Huns beaten back – last victory in the name of the Western Empire
  • 452 – Aquleia sacked so badly by Hun that court moved from Ravenna to Rome. Aetius will join in the war without allies.
  • Attila toys with idea of with attacking Rome, but some suggest that Huns starving – did lay siege for a long time.
  • Attila beaten by Visgoths in Gaul and move east again
  • Died on own vomit in 453
  • Battle of Nedao 454 ended monolithic Hunnic Empire.
